Mandy and Nick share a passion for the wines of Northern California. They began Merisi Wines to show their vision of the best of what the region can produce. As winemaker, Mandy has over a decade of winemaking experience in Sonoma, New Zealand, Italy and Napa.
“Merisi Wines are our attempt to be true to the grapes we harvest, reflect the vineyard and excite at the dinner table.” – Nick Donovan
With fruit thoughtfully sourced from boutique vineyards, farmed and cared for by the same families for generations, Mandy harvests to showcase each site’s distinctiveness. Using the timeless winemaking style of less is more (judicious intervention at all stages), the wine is fermented and aged with balance and vineyard site in mind.
“Each vineyard and growing season has its own unique variability, and our goal is to capture the positive nuances that come from these differences. We like to think of it as the personality of the fruit. I think the taste of the grapes in the vineyard should come through in the wine in the bottle, and ultimately that is what makes wines more enjoyable around the dinner table and able to age gracefully.” - Mandy Donovan
The wine is named after the Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi, better known as Caravaggio.
“We hope to channel a spirit who challenged the dominant artistic style of his time, and created a new style that was more immediate, earthy and passionate.” - Nick Donovan
